Rip Guru long live Gang Starr
Yesterday we lost a great one.4/19/10 marked the death of Keith Elam aka The Guru a poetic pioneering lyricist and half of legendary group Gang Starr.Guru had been fighting cancer for about a year. He had a cardiac arrest and fell into a coma on Feb 28,2010 . He came out of the coma and died on April 19,2010.
To me as a hip hop fan Gang Starr made 3 classic albums Step in the Arena,Daily Operation and Hard To Earn. Although every album or single they made was dope.
Gang Starr held down New York hip hop as the next school of hip hop after Run Dmc's rise in the 80's. They were New York hip hop in the 90's. Along with groups like A Tribe Called Quest,De La Soul,Brand Nubian,KMD,etc...Lets not forget Guru's solo albums called Jazzmatazz in which he made four. Always using the jazz sound in early 90's golden hip hop era. Guru pushed consciousness within his lyrics. And painted visual pictures for listeners lucky enough to hear his lyrical genius.Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal you will always be.Thank you Guru you won't be forgotten.
